Yesterday, Nikka announced the launch of a limited edition “Taketsuru Pure Malt Essentials” series of whiskies, with one release set to drop every year from 2026 until 2030. In 2030, the company will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Taketsuru Pure Malt’s launch.
This initial release is slated for June 16, 2026, with 10,000 bottles headed for Japan’s domestic market and another 10,000 for overseas. It places focus on the coal direct-fire distillation that made the Yoichi Distillery famous, so on the nose and palate we should expect a bit more of the powerful, deep notes of Yoichi. They also say that two of the blend components are distillate from both Yoichi and Miyagikyo from back in 2000, the year Taketsuru Pure Malt itself was launched. With a name like “Essentials,” my guess is future releases will focus on other specific aspects and components of the Taketsuru blend.
If you’ve been following Japanese whisky, specifically Nikka, you’ll know the company is no stranger to limited-edition NAS releases these days. Off the top of my head, there’s the Nikka Discovery series, the Nikka Grande releases for Global Travel Retail, basically annual releases of The Nikka Limited, Nikka Nine Decades… at some point, one must wonder what the phrase “limited edition” even means anymore.
This first release is slated to cost 27,500 yen after tax, and the bottle weighs in at 43% abv at 700ml. Is that an acceptable price for a limited-edition NAS release?
There’s an easy way to get an answer. For a small fee, visitors to the upcoming Tokyo International BarShow (May 9-10) will have the opportunity to sample this one well in advance of its June release.
