The Essence of Suntory Whisky Volume 2: Yamazaki loves Spain

One of the first major announcements last year was the The Essence of Suntory Whisky series. At the time I mentioned that those were the first three releases, with more to come. Suntory has honored their promise and is today officially releasing the next lineup!

This time around it’s three whiskies all from the Yamazaki Distillery, focusing on the distillery’s work with Spanish wood and sherry casks:

  • THE ESSENCE of SUNTORY WHISKY YAMAZAKI DISTILLERY 〈SPANISH OAK〉, 9 year, 56% abv, 500ml
    • Aged in a virgin Spanish Oak wood cask made in-house by Suntory
    • Official tasting notes
      • Nose: woody, spicy, toasted pudding
      • Palate:  straight sweetness with an edge
      • Finish: Slight bitterness
  • THE ESSENCE of SUNTORY WHISKY YAMAZAKI DISTILLERY 〈MONTILLA WINE CASK〉, 9 year, 55% abv, 500ml
    • Aged in an ex-Montilla cask
    • Official tasting notes
      • Nose: dried fruit, brown sugar, pancakes, maple syrup
      • Palate: rich sweetness, thick viscosity
      • Finish: bitter and slightly sour
  • THE ESSENCE of SUNTORY WHISKY YAMAZAKI DISTILLERY 〈REFILL SHERRY CASK〉, 10 year, 53% abv, 500ml
    • Aged in a re-filled sherry cask
    • Official tasting notes
      • Nose: rum raising, custard creme, honey
      • Palate: smooth, sweet, and slightly sour
      • Finish: crisp

As with the last release, these bottles are again only being sold to bars, so don’t expect to see bottles being sold in stores.
